When Hans comes to claim his prize, the princess resignedly weds the creature, but is later amazed when the hedgehog spends two nights shedding his hairy coat of quills to become a handsome man. Overjoyed to see her father, the princess rushes to greet the wayward king. In return for the favor, the king agrees to grant Hans the first thing that greets him upon his return to the kingdom. Years later, Hans offers his hospitality to a weary king who has lost his way, and helps him find the way back to his kingdom.

Born of a poor farmer and his wife, young Hans is taunted by the neighbors and reviled by his father, and eventually leaves home.
